It’s important to choose your tax preparer carefully because you are entrusting them with your financial information.  You also want to make sure you are using someone who knows the tax laws and has the proper licensing and credentials.  Here are a few tips to help you choose the best tax preparer for your situation:

  • All paid tax preparers are required to register with the IRS and are assigned a PTIN that must be listed on returns they prepare.  The PTIN Directory lists all registered tax preparers and professionals.
  • Check the credentials of the tax preparer.  Click here for a list with links for IRS Tax Pro Association Partners.  Click here for explanations of credentials and qualifications of various tax professionals.
  • Check the history of the tax preparer.   The Better Business Bureau will have information about the preparer’s customer service.  You can also check for credentials and disciplinary problems using the links below:

Attorneys:  Tennessee State Bar Association

Certified Public Accountants:  Tennessee State Board of Accountancy

Enrolled Agents:  IRS.gov

  • Make sure your tax preparer can e-file.  Paid preparers who prepare returns for more than 10 clients must e-file the returns.
  • Make sure your tax preparer will be available after the tax deadline in case you have questions or need documentation for a loan or other paperwork.

Taxpayers are legally responsible for information that is included on their tax return even if another person prepares it.  Click here for more information about choosing a tax professional.
