If you make quarterly estimated tax payments, don’t forget that the 2nd quarter estimate is due on June 15th. Now is a good time to be thinking about next year’s taxes. There are several ways you can begin preparing for the 2017 tax season:

1) If you have a life change such as marriage, divorce, death of a spouse, birth of a child, a child not being claimed as a dependent anymore, or changes in your income, you should change your withholdings or quarterly estimated tax payment amounts to reflect the change. Life changes could also affect health care tax credit and premium amounts. More information about health insurance and taxes, can be found here.

2) Make sure all your previous year tax records are organized and stored in a safe place. These records may be needed to apply for loans or financial aid for college and having them ready will help those processes go more smoothly.

3) If you own a home, have a lot of medical expenses, or give to charity, keep those records in good order in case you are able to itemize. If you are self-employed or own rental property, keep your expense records organized throughout the year. A tax organizer, mileage log and expense spreadsheet can be downloaded here.
